Frequently Asked Questions
Short, plain answers to the questions families ask most about lead, children and testing.
About lead
Is there a safe level of lead for children?
No safe blood lead level in children has been identified. Even low levels have been linked to effects on learning, attention and behavior.
Why does lead build up instead of leaving the body?
The body handles lead much like calcium, so a large share is stored in bone and teeth. It can stay there for years to decades and be released back into the blood over time.
Why are young children more at risk?
They absorb more of the lead they swallow than adults, their brains are still developing and they put hands and objects in their mouths more often.
Can lead pass from mother to baby?
Yes. Lead stored in a mother's bones can be released during pregnancy and breastfeeding and reach the baby through the placenta and breast milk.
About testing
When should my child have a blood lead test?
Many children are tested at ages one and two, and New York State requires it. Ask your pediatrician, especially if you live in an older home.
Can I tell if my water has lead by looking at it?
No. Lead in water has no color, taste or smell. Only laboratory testing can tell you how much is present.
What is a first-draw sample?
The first water collected from a tap after it has sat unused for several hours, usually overnight. It shows the highest exposure someone drinking first thing in the morning is likely to get.
Is a home test kit enough?
Home kits can give a rough indication. Accredited laboratory analysis uses standardized methods with known detection limits, which matters at the low levels relevant for lead.
Reducing exposure
Is it safe to make formula with tap water?
Use cold water only, and run the tap first if water has been sitting. If you are unsure about lead in your water, testing gives a clear answer; bottled water is a reasonable short-term option while you find out.
Do water filters remove lead?
Some do. Look for a filter certified to reduce lead, and replace the cartridge as the manufacturer recommends.
How do I know if I have a lead service line?
Your water utility may have records, and many publish service line inventories. Lead pipe is dull gray, soft and shows a shiny silver color when gently scratched.
